About the Position
Volunteer role title: Engage Instructor (UoB Volunteer Placement)
Location: Various locations in Eastbourne & East Sussex
YMCA Engage is a programme of chair-based exercise activities for older people in a variety of settings including care, nursing and retirement homes. Each activity session aims to promote an individual’s mobility and more precisely their co-ordination, balance, strength and flexibility.
A typical session consists of individual activities, group games and challenges to encourage competition and reminiscence through sport, as well as more cognitively focused games which aim to challenge short-term memory, concentration, perception, visual and spatial processing and problem solving.
We have been running our placement programme with the University of Brighton for over six years. Historically working with students studying at the School of Sport & Service Management based in Eastbourne. However, applications are welcome from all. Students will assist our Lead Instructors in delivering our chair-based exercise activity sessions with the aim of the placement to apply learned theory into a practical & diverse context.
You will receive training & mentoring throughout the placement to support your transition from an assistant instructor to a competent lead. You will be working towards a possible 2nd year on placement with us where you can achieve the Lead Instructor status, independently delivering sessions & mentoring first year placements.
This is a 40-hour placement over the academic year (Oct-June), approximately 1-2 sessions per week (to be arranged).
See the role profile for full information. If you would like to discuss the placement then please contact Julie Burr, Engage Co-ordinator on 01323 412412 or email [email protected]
