Everyone deserves to feel safe at Christmas

Christmas should be a happy time but for many of the young people we help, this couldn't be further from the truth. The young people we support have had a difficult start in life. Many will face homelessness alone, scared about what their future holds. You can help change this.

Make a gift this Christmas that lasts a lifetime. Donate to our Christmas Appeal and help a young person to rebuild their life.

Our mission is to help children and young people in Sussex and Surrey have a fair chance to be who they want to be

The young people who come to us have experienced significant challenges and trauma. Our work increases their confidence, helps them regain trust in adults and provides a supportive community in which to build their resilience for life. Your support helps them see that they can have dreams and achieve them.

Who your support helps

One of our Youth Matters Awards nominees, Randy, smiling in a hoody outside a YMCA building

Randy’s story

“The support I received from all the staff was amazing. They felt like family and I still think of them that way.”

Randy had to leave his family and travel across the world to start a new life free from persecution. He lived in our 24-hour supported housing and is now thriving.

He passed his A-Levels and is now pursuing his dream of studying physiotherapy at university.

Vivian smiling, wearing a space patterned hoodie

Vivian’s story

“It feels like everyone at YAC understands where I’m at and how I’m feeling. They’re there for people who need it.”

Vivian had a tough time as a teenager and faced multiple barriers which were causing a lot of upset and confusion. He came across our Brighton Youth Advice Centre (YAC) and felt understood for the first time.

He started meeting with our support and advice worker who helped him figure things out about himself and realise his enormous potential.

Emi, e-wellbeing Youth Mental Health champion smiling, waring a denim jacket and white t-shirt

Emi's story

“It felt like I was different from others and that I couldn’t fit in. Before the Youth Research Project, I didn’t know that there were also other people who felt the same way.”

Emi is one of our e-wellbeing youth researchers. After experiencing her own mental health struggles at a young age, Emi was determined to help other young people like herself.

She is working hard with the support of our e-wellbeing team to encourage conversations in schools about mental health and wellbeing, and to reassure young people that they are not alone.

Sam sat on a boat with the sea behind him and a white boat in the distance

Sam's story

“I’ve learnt that sometimes my worries were just thoughts that come and go. I now know that sometimes I don’t need to worry about everything.”

Following on from two lockdowns and starting a new school, Sam was suffering from social anxiety. He found it difficult making new friends and suffered from panic attacks, resulting in him not wanting to leave the house.

After reluctantly started therapy with us, Sam settled into the sessions and his worries began to lessen. He was then able to socialise with school friends and enjoy going on trips to new places.

Tina's story

“WiSE helped me understand what a healthy relationship is and gave me the confidence I needed to speak up for myself.”

Tina found the support she received from our YMCA WiSE service invaluable following a difficult period in her life when she had been groomed by two older men.

Our YMCA WiSE worker was able to give Tina information around healthy relationships, recognising grooming, growing self-esteem, assertiveness and the issue of consent. They met every week, and Tina appreciated being in a safe place where they could discuss anything that was on her mind.
