Job Title: Y’s Girls Volunteer Mentor
Location: Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, UK
Hours: 1-2 hours per week (which will gradually reduce over the 12 month period)
Closing date: 30th April 2023
About the Position
We are looking for volunteers to support vulnerable female-identifying young people between the ages of 9-14, who can act as a positive role model to help them to overcome some of the challenges they may face and helping them to thrive. The volunteer will act as a Mentor, providing a friendly ear, support and guidance and advice on making positive life choices.
Y’s Girls Mentoring is a new community-led mentoring programme implemented by YMCA DownsLink Group in Brighton & Hove. YMCA DownsLink Group is one of 10 YMCAs across the UK implementing the Y’s Girls programme, which adapts and replicates the successful Plusone Mentoring programme model designed by YMCA Scotland. Mentors are trained and supervised by YMCA DownsLink Group.
Y’s Girls aims to
- Build more resilient young girls with a vision and ambition for their life, alongside the confidence that they can achieve their potential​
- Reduce likelihood of young girls developing mental health concerns, by developing young people’s relationships, skills and alternatives within their communities​
- Increase young people’s engagement with school​
- Increase young people’s engagement in community based activities
Over a 12 month period, the mentors and young people meet regularly and work together to identify achievable goals that will empower the mentee and build their resilience to enable them to lead fulfilling lives. The sessions offer an informal environment with the opportunity to discuss anything that might be worrying them, from family and personal relationships to lifestyle and education.
